I’m trying to get better about updating my blog so this morning I thought I’d share one of my favorite sessions featuring two of my favorite girls! We shot these photos back in April at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens for baby Q’s first birthday and we could not have asked for a nicer day or yummier light. Her sweet tutu dress was made by her mommy and it turned out absolutely perfect for this!

I got to meet and love on this sweet new baby girl! Being able to photograph newborns at home in their element with the whole family is my absolute favorite way to document such a sweet time. They call this style “lifestyle photography” but that’s really just the pinterest way of saying “real life”. This baby girl and her big brother have an age gap pretty similar to my own kids so I know this version of “real life” all too well. Lots of reminders of  “soft hands! be careful! gentle!” mixed in with even more of “don’t sit on your sister. she doesn’t like fingers in her eyes. no, she doesn’t want a bite of your snack.” Then there’s the times they’re interacting so sweetly together that you think your heart (and maybe your ovaries) might explode right there at that very moment because you could not possibly witness anything sweeter in your lifetime.

I’ve photographed every major milestone of Julian and Heather’s life together, but getting to witness and document the birth of their first child was by far the sweetest of all of them. I’ve watched them prepare for this moment for the past nine months and every ounce of preparation paid off when Heather brought this sweet girl earthside early on Tuesday morning. Seeing them work together as such a beautiful team with their doula and midwives is something I will never forget.

Heather, you are so incredibly strong and brave. Seeing you work so hard and with so much grace to bring your daughter into this world was an absolute privilege.

If anyone needs a doula, Dana Cluff with Bump to Baby Birth Services is AMAZING. Seeing her work together with Heather and Julian to create such a peaceful, safe, supportive environment during such a vulnerable time was so inspiring. I was trying to tell a friend just how amazing she was and the only word I could think of to describe Dana was “gifted”. She has a gift.

Before I met Erin in person for our shoot, I saw her in my living room on Fox Sports Southwest. She seemed like such a cool chic on-air and as we brainstormed and planned for our shoot I discovered she also shared my love of emojis! When we met in person the morning of our shoot, it was seriously like getting together with an old friend. She greeted me with a hug, that huge smile of hers, and I knew right away we were going to have fun! She was needing updated head shots and promo photos but wasn’t wanting a boring back drop so I ended up calling the folks at one of my favorite restaurants in Fort Worth, Tillman’s Roadhouse, to see if we could pretty please come up there to shoot before they opened. They were so sweet and accomodating! I think the location turned out perfect, but I’m pretty sure Erin would have rocked the heck out of a potato sack and a boring back drop. Fox Sports Southwest reporter Erin Hartigan photographed in Fort Worth, Texas by Shanna Leigh Images.pintopinterest

I’m not even kidding with that blog post title, either! Stephanie fell in love with a man from Ohio and then moved there to be with him, so when it came time to plan their Rockwall wedding, she was doing everything long distance and in the few trips she as able to make back home. I can’t imagine how stressful that must have been! We originally planned to do her bridal portraits in May but due to an alterations issue her dress wasn’t going to be ready until the week of her wedding. So we decided to do this ninja style and shoot her bridal portraits the three days before her wedding. I had it all planned out, we were going to shoot them at the gorgeous canals in Las Colinas but when I called the day before the session to secure the permit for photography I was greeted with bad news. Due to the massive amounts of rain and flooding the Dallas Fort Worth area had recently had, they weren’t able to issue permits to shoot at the canals due to a sewage problem. I was SO bummed, and seriously panicked. I wanted this to be absolutely perfect for her and when I saw a photo of her gorgeous lace Allure bridal gown the canals were THE spot I pictured for her portraits. I asked several photographer friends if they knew of anywhere even close to the look and feel of the canals and my amazing friend Lisa suggested that we shoot at Adriatica in McKinney. She sent over a few photos from a fashion editorial that she shot there and I knew that was the new place for us! So, about that Starbuck’s drive-thru…
starbucksdrivethrubridalportraitpintopinterestThanks to the beauty of photoshop, I bet nobody would ever guess that the photo above was taken in the drive-thru at Starbucks, right? Bridal portraits are very much a southern tradition and with her fiancé, Chris, being from Ohio I think it was a very new concept for him to begin with. But once we knew we got *the* shot in the drive-thru, Stephanie and her mom might have had a little fun telling Chris that “we just shot the bridal portraits at Starbucks”. It was awesome and hilarious and I’m sure he was either really confused or thought wedding planning had finally gotten the best of us and we had surely lost our marbles! Either way, it goes down as one of my favorite “stories behind a photo” that I’ve taken. Enjoy the rest of these gorgeous photos taken around Adriatica…

We shot Stephanie’s bridal portraits on Wednesday. I came straight home, and stayed up till the wee hours of the morning to get the gallery ready for Stephanie to choose the image she wanted on a canvas for her reception, only to find out that the lab I usually use currently had a slower turn around time than usual. Her wedding was on Saturday so of course PANIC set in! Then a friend told me to check out Pounds Lab. I gave them a call and was greeted by a super friendly person that listened to my rambling plea of why I needed a 20×30 canvas in 24 hours or less only to be told “No problem! Of course we’d be glad to do this for you!” They’ve definitely earned a customer for life! So, if you’re a pro in need of excellent customer service and beautiful print products, definitely check them out.
